Photography competition - World Tourism Day 2014

The world will be celebrating world Tourism Day on 27th Sep 2014 , since the formation of Manipur Tourism Forum, we have been celebrating Tourism Day on 27th Sep 2013 for the last three year. As a part of the celebration this year MTF will be again organizing competition and certain activities.

In connection with the celebration of world Tourism day "Tourism & Community development, Manipur Tourism Forum is holding a photography competition with the Theme of world tourism day 2013 "Tourism & Community development"

The Category for the photography completion is "Tourism & Community development" Photographs that reflect the beauty of Manipur in releation with "Tourism & Community development" will be considered for the awards.

Floral tributes were paid at both the Imphal Indian War Cemetry, Hatta and Imphal War Cemetry, Dewlahland in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal.

Governor VK Duggal today led a host of other imminent officials including Commonwealth War Grave Commission Barry Murphy, First Secretary (Defences), Australian High Commissioner to India Jane Spicer, Military Attache Embassy of United States Colonel Larry J Redmon and British Deputy High Commissioner to India Scott Furssedonn Wood in offering floral tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives during the 1944 World War II Battle of Inphal, today.

Organising Committee member Yumnam Rajeshwor said that with the support of Manipur Government, 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation and Manipur Tourism Forum the 70th Anniversary Battle of Imphal was kicked off on March 23 of this year.

Throughout India, 62666 commonwealth soldiers and non commonwealth soldiers are remembered at various cemeteries and memorial sites, he said.

In the two cemeteries in Imphal, 3299 soldiers are commemorated, however the maximum number of soldiers who died in Imphal are commemorated at the Rangoon memorial, he said.

In both cemeteries of Imphal 3299 soldiers are commemorates but much more soldiers who died in Imphal are commemorated at the Rangoon Memorial. Unfortunately not many of these soldiers have the known graves, he said.

The three-month long observation of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal (World War 2) came to an end today. Today’s programme was held late this afternoon at Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC) auditorium participated by Manipur Governor VK Duggal, Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Gaikhangam, Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur, Barry Murphy, Director, Common Wealth War Grave Commission, Gen. P.M.Bali, GOC 57 Mountain Division, Scott Furssedonn Wood, British Deputy High Commission to India, Jane Spicer, First Secretary, Australian High Commission to India , Col Larry J. Redmon, Military Attache, Embassy of United States, Chairman and Members of the Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation.

Other features of the closing ceremony have been the showing of audio and video compilation of the three-month long observation of the ‘Battle of Imphal” which began on March 23. A souvenir was also released on the occasion.

Chairperson of Burma Campaign Society Akiko Mcdonald could not come to the programme but a video message from him was shown. Ministers and MLAs of Manipur also participated in today event.

Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Chief Minister highlighted the chronicles of the World War-II in Manipur.

London-based Japanese filmmaker and actor Junichi Kajioka hold a premiere of his World War II epic "Imphal 1944" to mark the end of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Imphal.

Thousands of soldiers, belonging to both the Japanese and the Allied Forces, were killed and maimed in several high-pitched battles across Manipur, a significant, but forgotten, theatre of WW II. Notably, the twin battles of Imphal and Kohima have been called "the greatest-ever battle involving British forces" by the National Army Museum, London.

The year 2014 is the 70thAnniversary of the Battle of Imphal of 1944. It was seventy years ago that Manipur was witness to an epic battle between the British-led Allies and the Japanese and the Indian National Army (INA). From March to July of that year, over 200,000 Japanese, Britons, Indians, Gurkhas and men from several other nations clashed in the hills and valley of Manipur in what has since been described as one of the greatest battles of the Second World War. Indeed, on 20 April 2013, the combined battle of Imphal/Kohima was named as Britain’s Greatest Battle by the National Army Museum of the UK.
Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation with the support of Government of Manipur have started commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Battle of Imphal from 23rd March 2014 to 28th June 2014. This has involved holding series of events across Manipur to mark and commemorate key dates of the Battle of Imphal.

3/06/2014 - Imphal -Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in India, will be attending the Closing of the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of Battle of Imphal (WWII). During his stay in Imphal, he will be visiting India Peace Memorial at Maibam Lotpa Ching to pay floral tribute and attend the Closing Ceremony of the Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary Battle of Imphal which is scheduled for 28th June 2014. He is also likely to visit few battle sites in Manipur and also the World War II Museum founded by 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation.

Mr. Yasuhisa Kawamura graduated from Hitotsubashi University and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Govt. of Japan. Before being posted to Embassy of Japan in India in 2013, Mr. Kawamura was the Deputy Chief of Mission in Consulate General of Japan in New York. He also held various important positions during his career as First Secretary, Permanent Mission to Int’l Organization in Geneva, Director, International Press Division, MOFA, Director, Second International Organization Division, Economic Affairs Bureau, MOFA.

Mr. Yasuhisa Kawamura during his visit will be the ‘Charge d’Affaires ad interim’ of Embassy of Japan in India.

The 70th Anniversary Battle of Imphal (WWII) is being organized by Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation with the support of Government of Manipur. Shri O. Ibobi Singh, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur is the Chief Patron of the Organising Committee.

His Excellency Takeshi Yagi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Japan in India was the Guest of Honour during the Inauguration of the 70th Anniversary Battle of Imphal (WWII) on 23rd March 2014.

Battle of Red Hill (WWII) - Invitation
